Room Junkie wins Jacqueline Golds #WOW –  Women on Wednesday award

Jacqueline Gold. CEO of http://www.annsummers.com, 16th richest woman in Britain and such an inspirational business leader, has a competition called #WOW, Women on Wednesday, where she seeks and chooses three female led businesses to promote.

When selecting the three winners, Jacqueline looks for businesses that are interesting, that have strong brand values and that she thinks have potential to grow and succeed in their industry. She looks for quality products, well designed websites and entrepreneurs who appear to have a good business sense and who have thought about what the consumer wants and how to deliver it. ( These words I have copied and pasted directly from her website. Hers, not mine. )

She picked http://www.roomjunkie.com . What more can I say?

It almost makes up for the disappointment of missing my date with Theo Paphitis. Jacqueline also stays in regular contact with all of the #WOW winners, offering advice where needed.

Do you remember , last week I said that I was was going to do something brave and bold.

Well, this was it. I knew exactly how hard it would be to catch Jacqueline’s attention, but I was determined that I would. I didn’t even tell my husband that I was applying!

Apparently fortune favours the brave, and I am overwhelmed and thrilled with my win! So if you have a dream, simply go for it, you might just surprise yourself on the journey!

I am working very hard behind the scenes  to finalise the content for my book and also to create a course that will turn you into a fully fledged Room Junkie, who will consistently and confidently create the perfect room. If you have a spare minute, I would love if you would help me out by answering these three quick questions. I would really appreciate your insight and opinion.

Also, because I am getting very busy finishing the book and creating the course, I will be winding down the €90 room design / consultations. If anyone was thinking of availing of this special offer, you should  do so quickly. Once you reserve your place, you can progress your room whenever you wish. I just won’t be able to take many more  new bookings.

Top 5 tips for painting furniture

My 5 best tips for painting furniture
View this email in your browser
5 tips to remember when painting furniture in eggshell or satinwood

I have often told you that one of the easiest ways to transform a piece of furniture, is to paint it. Here are my 5 best tips to ensure that you always get a perfect finish. If you follow these simple steps, you will always achieve a flawless result..

Number One – Sand it.

Do not be tempted to skip this step. Years ago, I learned how to French Polish, and trust me, sanding is vital to getting the perfect finish. I usually use a fine grade black sandpaper and just sand it lightly all over. You are simply keying the surface to help it accept the new paint.
Number Two – Clean it
After sanding, you will be left with a dusty piece of furniture, so take a rag, old cotton sheets or pillowcases are perfect,  and pour on a little white spirit. Wipe the furniture down to remove all dust and lint. If your timber is bare, this also stops the grain from raising.

Number Three – Prime it

If your furniture is laminate or melamine, use BIN primer from Zinnser, otherwise use Bullseye 123 also from Zinnser. For speed and ease, I like to use a small foam roller, with a small brush to get into any fiddly bits. Let the primer dry completely, and lightly sand  away any drips. Then repeat the cleaning process with the rag and white spirit.

Number Four - Paint it

Now you are ready to paint up! I like to use a small foam roller to speed thing up, and I also like the flat finish achieved. Again, I use a small angled brush to get into any hard to reach bits. I often find that one coat will suffice, however if you need a second coat, let the paint dry completely, sand away any drips, wipe down with a rag, and apply your second coat.

Step Five – Varnish it.

If you have used an eggshell or satinwood finish, there will be no need to protect your furniture and you can skip this step. However if you have used a chalk paint or an emulsion, then I suggest that you protect it with a coat of water based gloss. I use Colortrend’s. http://www.colortrend.ie and apply it very lightly with a foam roller.

One paint that I dying to try out is the  Autentico Eggshell http://www.autentico-chalk-paint.co.uk/. I have heard great things about it , and it requires no priming or protecting.I plan to try it out on my kitchen cupboards. If it works out for me, then step five will simply read – Enjoy a celebratory glass of wine!
Cinderella did not get to the Ball.
I was devastated beyond words. As I went to put my suitcase in the car last Wednesday morning, ( I had planned to work in Dublin that day ),in my high heels, I slipped on a tiny dusting of snow and fell,  causing serious damage to my back and right shoulder. I could not sit down and the pain and spasm lasted for days.

So Cinderella did not board a flight to Birmingham,  and I will have to put meeting Theo Paphitis off for another day.My certificate is in the post, the disappointment is behind me and I am now focusing all my energy on getting my book published.

One very positive thing has come out of not being able to attend the event however. Julien Callede the co – founder of http://www.made.com was one of the speakers that day.

Made.com is a wonderful company, based in the UK, which I have long admired. They work with the most talented furniture designers and have their custom designs made to the highest specification in the Far East. This ensures a seriously high end product at very competitive prices.

I leveraged my #SBS win, and made contact with Julien, he has sent me his email details and I will be in touch with him next week.I am also thrilled to say that he also follows Room Junkie on twitter too!

Let’s just say that I have a brave little plan up my sleeve. You will be the very first to know!

Day 1 – 10 days of inspiration to give your home a high end finish on a  budget
Major excitement happening on Friday!
On Friday I will be in the ICC in Birmingham at the invitation of UK Dragon Theo Paphitis. You may remember that he picked Room Junkie as one of the winners of his Small Business Sunday Competition. The fact that he believes in Room Junkie gives me such inspiration to move forward, and strive to  become the leading champion for affordable interior design.I have such a passion for design, and genuinely believe that it does not take loads of money to create the perfect home.

I will also have the opportunity to meet Judy Naake, the lady who brought St. Tropez tan to the UK. She converted a 4k investment into a 70 million pound sale, so I am very eager to see what she has to say!

I will also get to meet Julien Callede, who is one of the co-founders of made.com, one of my favourite online furniture companies. Their dream was to make high quality furniture affordable for everyone, and there are certainly comparable philosophies that Room Junkie have in common with them.

I am so excited about this opportunity, and I can’t wait to share all the news with you.
Your dream home is a lot closer than you think!
Your dream home really is closer and easier than you think!

If you would like me to help create the perfect room design for you, keeping costs to a minimum, upcycling what you already have, showing you step by step what to do, and sharing my tricks to make it look like a Showhouse,it  will only cost you €90 per room.

Go on – have the perfect room this Spring, with the smartest €90 you ever invested.

Room Junkie’s top 5 Interior Design trends for 2015

Top 5 Design trends for 2015
View this email in your browser

Here are my top 5 trends for 2015.

One
Grey Kitchens

Mr. Christian Gray got this one right! Any colour as long as it is grey.

The colour grey became the biggest success story of 2014, and there are so many stunning warm grey or greige colours to choose from. Paint companies like Little Green and Colortrend have put a lot of work into creating the perfect greys.

2014 also saw a rise in soft grey as a very popular kitchen colour, and I predict that this trend will be even bigger in 2015. Grey works equally well in a contemporary kitchen, as it does in a traditional one.
Two
All over wallpaper

I predict the demise of the feature wall in 2015, with home-owners plucking up the courage to make a feature of every wall , with all over wallpaper. I have actually done this myself on two recent projects.

Time will tell if I am right or not!
Three

Copper turning to gold

While I feel we will continue to see plenty of beautiful copper accessories, I think that we will see the re – emergence of gold and brass in bathroom fittings, and in lavish accessories.

Love it or loath it, brass is back!
Four
Beautiful Light bulbs

The trend for statement lighting will continue, but with an emphasis on oversized light bulbs becoming the light fitting, or the use of  beautiful bulbs like these Eidson bulbs, which are a work of art all by themselves.
Dark Blue Walls

This trend has long been a favourite of mine, but I do think we will see a movement from grey and charcoal to inky blue, particularly in bedrooms. I also predict that we will will use navy as an accessory colour throughout 2015.
This is my inspiration for the week.

No matter how you are feeling, try to start every day with the thought that something wonderful is just about to happen.

I wish you health, happiness and a beautiful home in 2015. Until next week…..

Stay fabulous,

Anne xx

Happy New Year.

Happy New Year!

Here is my New Years’s message to you all. Just click on the play button to the left to receive it.

Just so you know, I have launched
a You Tube Channel called Room Junkie TV, and my plan is to provide weekly video tips and tutorials. This will kick off next week with a brief tutorial to accompany the free eBook  Sell fast, Sell Strong which you will receive in your inbox.
Here I will share my secrets to successfully staging your home for selling, and how to make it stand out from the competition. If you know someone who is planning to sell in the New Year, please share this with them too.
What happened in 2014
February

February kicked off with an invite to Enterprise Ireland’s online network launch, led by their inspirational new boss Julie Sinnamon.

I also met up with the amazing Marissa Carter of Cocoa Brown Tan and Roz Martin of MedColl Derma . Both of these girls have since become great friends to Room Junkie, and to me personally.
April

Their was great excitement in April when Theo Paphitis of Dragon’s Den (UK), picked Room Junkie as one of his #SBS @TheoPaphitis winners. This is where he picks his six favourite small businesses, and promotes them to his 433k followers.

The fact that he believes in Room Junkie’s potential, gives us the inspiration to help you create the home that you deserve.

I am meeting him in Birmingham on Friday January 30th, and will spend the day with him, his team and the other winners. A rare honour indeed!
May

With May came the absolutely fantastic Irish Tatler Game Changers Conference in the Convention Centre, where I took second place in the twitter competition on the day. A  sporting lesson perhaps, there is only ever one winner, but I will try again in 2015!

I am very proud to say that Norah Casey has also become a good friend to Room Junkie.
June

#SBS The above all arrived in the mailbox. Roll on January 30th!
August

August saw a lovely invitation from Colortrend Paints to design a room set for the 2014 Autumn Ideal Homes Show.

I was particularly honoured to have been asked, but declined, because I knew that I needed to focus all my energy into growing Room Junkie, without any distraction. I really was flattered to have been asked though and fingers crossed, they may ask me again this year.

 September

Look what I discovered on You Tube. The RTE Showhouse programme where it all started, with the lovely Shane Filan of Westlife.    #Memories

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2D0cekdpjCo
October
This was the most incredible event, where I met and helped so many people who are renovating, or building new homes . The positivity here was tangible. I  came home exhausted but elated!
November
My lovely Mother would have been thrilled with this little article, She bought Woman’s Way every week for forty years.

I forgive them the typo.It should have been €90 not €399!
That was a snipped of the Room Junkie journey through 2014. None of it would have been possible without the support and encouragement  of each and every one of you. We are a group of  like minded people who love interior design, who want to live in a home that is perfect for our individual needs and who are constantly learning.

I am so excited as we enter 2015. Next week will kick off with the FREE eBook, followed shortly by the publication by Guildhall Press of the coffee table book, and by Springtime, the much talked about Ready to Go Collection of seriously affordable pre designed rooms.

In the meantime, I will continue to offer affordable Skype / Phone consultations and room designs. So if you need any help or encouragement, with any aspect of the design of your home, please just lift the phone or drop an email. I would be delighted to help.
Why not check out Room Junkie here for more design fun and inspiration!
