10 ways to improve your Bedroom

10 ways to improve your bedroom

There may be 50 ways to leave your lover, but here are 10 ways to spruce up your bedroom

One – Add some comfort underfoot.
Just because you have a hard floor in your bedroom doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice some luxury. If, like me, you like to sink your toes into something soft and welcoming, you can. Just buy a remnant of gorgeous carpet, size it so that it borders your bed, and have the edges bound. Your toes will thank you. It looks great too!

Two – Paint it up
If you are tired of mismatched bedroom furniture, and don’t want the hassle or expense of changing it, why not paint it in some hard-wearing white satinwood paint?  Chose a vibrant paint colour or some wallpaper, for a feature wall to accentuate the bed, and coordinate it all with some gorgeous fabrics.

Three – Add a padded headboard
If your room is small, you will make it seem much larger by ditching your bulky framed bed, and replacing it with a fabulous upholstered headboard. This is something that you could even try yourself as a weekend DIY project. The simple headboard on the left is just a sheet of MDF covered in some foam and fabric.
Four – Add some mirrors
Every bedroom needs a full length mirror, whether we like what we see in it or not. Adding a mirrored finish to one of your doors is a very easy way to achieve this. It will have the added benefit of making your room seem bigger too. Mirrored furniture is another way of adding some glamour and spaciousness at the same time.
Five – Pile on the cushions
Use lots of cushions and a throw to add texture, colour and class. A little tip is to buy loads of different cushions from a shop with a returns policy.  I always do this, because it is much easier to figure out what works best in the room, rather than in the shop. Simply return those that you don’t need!
Six – Light it up
Always choose a lamp with a tall base for your bedside locker, as it will give you a better pool of light for reading. Another little tip is to pick one with a tall skinny base. It takes up much less space on your locker, leaving room for a candle, flowers or a book.

Don’t forget that you can use a hanging pendant light on either side too. This can look really dramatic, but there is obviously a wiring issue to be considered.

Seven – Create some atmosphere
Use a warm intimate grey like this one to create instant atmosphere. A soft grey will work so well with most colour schemes and timber. White painted skirting and architrave really sets if off.

Eight – The budget option
Anything is possible, even on a small budget. This room was transformed for under €200, by painting the bed, the furniture and the light shade. The chair and the lampshade were given a DIY fabric makeover. Change the wall colour, add some new knobs, and reuse existing artwork and a mirror. Operation transformation!
Nine – Invest in some fabulous new bedlinen
Sometimes all it takes is to invest in some top quality white bedlinen. Simple!
Ten – Symmetry and balance
If you can imagine folding your room in half so that everything is a matching image of itself, you have symmetric balance. It is probably one of the oldest interior design techniques, but nothing will better help you achieve a sense of calm in your bedroom.
The bed is flanked by two identical lockers and lamps. The pictures above the bed are perfectly balanced. Try it out for yourself!
